These yeast-raised doughnuts are like a sweet, flavorful cloud because they are so light and fluffy. Glaze with a straightforward vanilla sauce.

Add the yeast and 1 teaspoon of sugar to a small bowl with 1/2 cup of warm water.

Allow the yeast mixture to stand for 5 to 10 minutes or until a creamy foam layer forms on top.

In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the milk and vegetable shortening.

Cook, stirring occasionally, until the shortening has melted and the milk has small bubbles around the edge.

Get rid of the heat.

The milk and shortening should be added to the work bowl of a large stand mixer along with 1/4 cup of sugar and salt.

Allow mixture to stand until warm after mixing on low speed just to dissolve the sugar.
